Locations trigger powerful memories and feelings. Places that create harmony between man made structures and the natural environment are most appealing to me because of the peaceful ambiance I feel when I am in those spaces. Other places simply demand my attention for the emotional reaction they provoke in me; for their own personality. How does a scrap yard make you feel? There are certain moments in time that you want to capture for the energy that emanates from them; the proud energy of a win after a high school football game under the lights, the work energy of a female community in a busy kitchen, the relaxed energy of a hard working matriarch asleep on the beach, the contemplative energy of a young adult on New Years Eve, the guarded solitary energy of a Floridan Heron on the dock at night, the victorious energy of an adventurer racing to the top, or the joyous energy of a group of individuals practicing their faith or finishing a performance. These are memories worth capturing because they speak to the energy of life.

ABSTRACTS

I have used abstract painting as a way to fuel and nourish the creative process. It allows me to be free from the constraints of trying to achieve some likeness to reality and to focus more on the feelings that each line, stroke and color evokes. Any discernible images come from memory or a simplified image and are not the object of the painting but a useful part that may help you interpret the less representational marks and strokes to understand what I may be thinking or feeling. What images do you see? What feelings do the brush strokes and colors evoke? Do the titles help or hinder your visceral experience?

SERIES

A series of paintings helps to explore different states of being and may be more effective in getting my message across than just one. Below are two paintings in a series expressing the state of playing it safe, being on guard and trying to prevent things from happening versus the state of growing, expanding, spreading your wings, and expressing your self; being what you were meant to be….a bird in flight. Innermost Second International Becoming Artist Exhibition was a site-specific exhibition that took place in the White Pearl Gallery, Prague, Czech Republic May 2018. Set in a white walled gallery, in the beautiful city of Prague, five of my paintings from the Reorient Home Exhibition plus three additional paintings were displayed along with works of four other artists from the US and Australia. The exhibition was a culmination of a year long project with Jessica Serran at BecomingArtist.com. Jessica described the event as “a one-of-a-kind, intimate art event and experience- a public ritualized ceremony designed to open up space for universal emotion, personal vulnerability and genuine dialogue. In this special visual art exhibition, five artists reveal their innermost worlds - their thoughts, feelings, how they think and what they believe.” It was a wonderful expansive experience that helped me proclaim the artist that I am and still becoming today.

Reorient Home Exhibition Project was a site-specific exhibition that took place in December 2017. Set in my living room, the work centered around 27 paintings accompanied by an audio of recited poetry which enhanced the overall experience by engaging multiple senses. The work was the culmination of my struggles to transition from where I was to where I want to be at this point in my life. By assessing the things I chose to paint, and stating what the images meant to me in poetry, I was able to re-orient myself, to find my position again in relation to my surroundings as I transition from the co-dependency of motherhood toward independent empty-nester.
